1. Introduction
Because of various natural or man-made disasters, disaster novels have got more and more attention from people in recent years. Western countries, regarded as the main factory of disaster novel, have already formed a fixed mode of this kind of novels, that is, amplifying inpidualistic heroes in the disaster to reflect goodness and evilness of human nature. Novels like Cormac McCarthy’'s The Road and Stephen King’s The Mist have been adapted into films, which are highly praised by the audiences, and the contents of them are also typical among disaster novels.
The Road is a post-apocalyptic science fiction(Fang, 2012, p.69), and it mainly describes the story that when disaster came suddenly, cannibalism appeared among survivors, under which condition a father and his son stick to their own principle and continued their own interminable journey in searching for a warmer shelter. The Mist, likes The Road, tells a story after the sudden coming of the mysterious mist, when a group of people were trapped in a small supermarket. With danger both inside and outside, a father finally chose go into the dangerous mist with his son for the hope of surviving.
The Mist and The Road all set their background in a world suffering from the disaster, and the shinning points and dark sides of human nature are vividly presented in these two novels. The plot twists and turns, hope and despair coexisting. The inpidualistic hero images are amplified, though the hero images slightly differ, the contradictions between human nature and inpidualistic heroism in these two novels are very similar.
