Abstract In linguistics, grammaticalization is a process of language change by which words representing objects and actions transform to become grammatical markers. Grammaticalization is a powerful aspect of language, as it creates new function words within language. However, grammaticalization not only occurs in official languages such as English, Mandarin, but also occurs in dialects. In this study, the Shanghai dialect will be used as the research object. Some typical examples will be listed and combined with the theories of grammaticalization in order to explore the process of grammaticalization of some discourse in which impolite connotations arise and to disclose the motivation behind the changes.
The paper falls into six parts. The first part serves as an introduction. The second part aims at elaborating the issues of grammaticalization and politeness. The third part will analyze how metaphor plays the role in the progress of the grammaticalization of the phrases in spoken Shanghai dialect. The fourth part probes into morphological changes of the phrases. The fifth part will analyze the motivation of the grammaticalization of the phrases. The sixth part functions as a conclusion.
Key Words: grammaticalization, impoliteness, Shanghai dialect
