This paper aims to analyze the factors affecting middle school students’ listening comprehension and put forward some proposals on how to improve their listening ability. This paper is composed of five parts. In the first part, the paper gives a brief introduction. In the second part, Studies and researches on middle school students’ listening ability improvement in the background and problems are analyzed. Linguistic factors and non-linguistic factors affecting middle school students will be mentioned in the third part. In the fourth part, the paper will focus on the methods of improving students’ hearing level. Finally, the paper makes a conclusion.
Ⅱ. The Status of Middle School Students’ English Listening Comprehension
Listening, as a basic language skill, always develops before reading and writing. An American research reveals that people spent 70% of their time on various of communication. People receive at least 42% information through listening when they are talking with each other. At the same time, according to 2nd language acquisition theory, language input is the basic requirement of language acquisition. While listening, as a principal forms of language input, plays a significant part in language acquisition.
A survey on learner listening research found that factors which influenced listening comprehension can be summarized into five categories: listening materials, the listener, speaker, listening tasks and listening environment. Additionally, students’ listening level is influenced by the big scale of class, limited training time and regularly guidance.
