Through a feminist analysis of the narrative techniques of the three stories in Sugar and Other Stories from two aspects of the space and time and usage of symbols, this thesis intends to explore the techniques that Byatt uses to deconstruct the writing traditions of male center and reflect her idea of demolishing the dominant culture of “phallus”. Moreover, it tends to show the depressed and tragic living situation of women under the hierarchy of paternity. Chapter one mainly introduces the author Byatt, the work Sugar and Other Stories, research status at home and abroad and the research purpose and significance. Chapter two explores the space-tine techniques to show women’s limited freedom and how they try to break such space and create their own time and space. From spatial aspect, women are limited in the boarding school, the sitting room and the deserted broken house in the three stories. We can see women are trapped in the trivial housework and lose their own freedom in such closed space. From temporal aspect, women turn to dream and imagination to establish their own time and pursue freedom. Emily imagines an ideal reader to fight against her teacher in “Racine and the Tablecloth”; Veronica’s memory shows us the living situation of the three generation in “Rose-Colored Teacups”; A-Oa’s recall tells us her tragic life in “The Dried Witch”. Then, it mainly explores the symbolic techniques from three aspects of character, object and scene. Chapter three analyzes the symbolic meanings of the characters, objects and scenes in the three stories. These symbols can help us to get a profound understanding of the deep meanings of the three stories and the fate of the female characters. 安东尼娅•苏珊•拜厄特《糖和其他故事》时空象征手法(3):http://www.751com.cn/yingyu/lunwen_40970.html
