Abstract This thesis is a Feminist literature study on Carrie’s growth in Sister Carrie. The cutting point of the study is the dynamic change of the heroin’s feminist awareness, and her growth is studied through it. Feminist reading on Sister Carrie has been popular in literature fields since the 1980s. Based on the previous study of feminism in Sister Carrie, this study is carried out from a new angle; the process of Carrie’s study is regarded as the developing process of her feminist awareness.42618
Guided by Marxist-feminism theory, the growth of Carrie is pided into three phases under the index of the condition of Carrie’s feminist awareness. In each phase, the features of Carrie’s growth are reflected from various perspectives by discussing the typical factors, such as the contradictory in Carrie’s characteristics, different attitudes towards men and the comparison between Carrie and Hurstwood. Historical literary criticism method is another important theory basis in this study. Based on this theory, an overall statement of the writer and the novel is provided in chapter two. The intention and the effects of Sister Carrie are analyzed from the background of this novel. From the study above, the necessary factors of woman growth are concluded: economical independence, right attitude to career and difficulty.
There are six chapters in this thesis. Chapter one is the introduction part about the purpose, significance, framework of the study and literature review. Chapter two is the statement of the writer and the novel. The three phases of Carrie’s growth are discussed from chapter three to chapter five: the bud of feminist awareness, the preliminary awakening of feminist awareness and the maturity of feminist awareness. Chapter six is the conclusion part, which provides the restatement of the study, as well as the social meaning of Sister Carrie from a new angel.

摘要本文是女性主义视角下的文学研究，以《嘉莉妹妹》中嘉莉的成长历程为研究对象，选取主人公女性意识的动态变化为切入点，从嘉莉的女性主体意识的发展来看她的成长过程。女性主义文学研究自上世纪八十年代以来成为了《嘉莉妹妹》的研究新举措。本文在前人研究的基础上，选取新颖的研究角度，将嘉莉妹妹的成长过程解读为其女性意识的发展过程。
在马克思主义女性主义指导下，本研究将嘉莉妹妹的成长过程分为三个阶段，以嘉莉的女性意识状态为分段标志。在分段研究中，选取各阶段的代表性因素，从多种层面体现嘉莉妹妹的成长特点。比如，嘉莉的性格矛盾，嘉莉对于男性的态度变化，以及嘉莉与赫斯特伍德的人生轨迹对比。历史文化文学批评理论也是本文的重要指导理论，在此理论指导下，本研究在第二章进行作者和作品陈述，挖掘作品的创作背景,从中分析作者的创作意图和创作效果。通过研究，本文得出在成长过程中女性必须具备的条件：经济独立，正确的职业态度和较强的抗压能力。
本论文分为六个章节，第一章为引言，包括研究陈述和文献综述。第二章为作者作品陈述，第一部分介绍作者西奥多·德莱塞的成长历程，第二部分介绍《嘉莉妹妹》的创作背景，包括当时的历史和文化背景。第三章至第五章为嘉莉成长的三个阶段——女性意识的萌芽、初步觉醒和成熟。第六章为结论部分，本章对本研究进行总结陈述，从另一角度阐述《嘉莉妹妹》的社会意义。
