1. Introduction
1.1 Significance
English, as an international language, has set off a new round of global boom of English learning. The reason is that the significance of English is recognized by more and more people who learn the English as their second language. In China, English as L2 (ESL) has been taught to children since their early age.
Talking about how to teach English, there are numerous teaching methods and teaching strategies, like flowers blossom in a riot of colour. Overall, language teaching methods cannot work without research and analysis on cognitive structure and characteristics of students. Similarly, language learning needs some routine research and thinking on language characteristics and also rule of language formation. So, how to teach English effectively? Especially how to promote the reform and development of listening and speaking teaching in junior high school English courses? It is essential to find out teaching methods and strategies that are suitable for students’ physiological and psychological characteristics.
Although the junior middle school English classes are organized systematically, I can still feel the anxiety and pressure of students in some English classes, instead of a real thirst for English learning. Apart from the students’ cognition and their interest in English learning, one of the factors affecting students’ English learning efficiency lies in the teachers’ teaching methods which lack interaction and dynamic.
TPR (Total Physical Response), as one kind of effective English teaching method, can guide and help students combine the language input with output together in daily English courses. It brings zero-stress to students in the classroom which can promote their interest in ESL learning. The TPR theory emphasizes the value of interest which is suitable for the students’ learning characteristics. On one hand, this method can maximize the sensory stimulation and connection of the students’ body to realize the enhancement of cognition. On the other hand, students can develop their own learning enthusiasm and initiative during the practice, and ultimately form self-contained learning quality. Therefore, the TPR method is efficient and can be applied in teaching English listening and speaking class.
1.2 Purpose
The objective of the essay is to apply TPR theory to English listening and speaking class. I will design a teaching plan of junior middle school listening and speaking class based on TPR theory innovatively, and combine theory with practice, so as to optimize the process of classroom teaching and improve the teaching effect. Therefore, this thesis not only has academic value and theoretical significance, but also has application value and practical significance.
1.3 Framework
This thesis mainly includes six parts, and the contents of each part as follows:
The first section is the introduction, it describes the significance, purpose and framework of this paper. Chapter 2 mainly introduces the theory, specialties and advantages of TPR theory, and then discusses elements of TPR class and the relationship between the characteristics of TPR and junior middle school students. Chapter 3 mainly gives a feasibility analysis based on the principles, the position and the main points and difficulties of the teaching design of English listening and speaking class. Chapter 4 is the main body part of this paper, namely, there is a specific design of English listening and speaking class based on TPR theory and an evaluation of this design. Chapter5 is the theoretical reflection of designing teaching plan based on TPR theory. The last section is the conclusion in which the author summaries the design and gives out some suggestions.
