As a newly developed theory, “feminist translation tries to obtain the dignity and equality for women as the starting point and get rid of the old consciousness of sexism in translation studies and social ideas, while it’s not discontent with the notion that denigrates the translator, translation and women to the inferiority” (Xu Lai, 2004:16). Feminist translators take translation as weapon to fight against patriarchal language and change the inferiorities of translators and women. The representatives, Luise Von Flotow and Sherry Simon and so on, were trying to eliminate the gender discrimination in translation and obtain the dignity for women. They contributed a lot to the feminist translation theory
In the late 1980s, feminism was introduced to China by Zhu Hong, a female translator who had a great influence on the writing of women at that time. However, it was not until early 21st century that feminism truly exerted influences on Chinese translation studies. More and more scholars started to publish papers about feminist translation theory on academic journals. In China, the influence of feminism on translation is not so deep as that in west and the studies are still in the pioneering stage.
