Abstract There are two different trends in the translation: one is to get close to thetarget language culture and another is to keep the source language culture. Thatis domestication and foreignization. The debate on domestication andforeignization never stops since the appearance of translation theory. This thesisis focused on the common sayings in the first 70 chapters of Outlaws of theMarsh. Then it pides the research data into four different categories accordingto the cultural factors they contain, they are the common sayings which concernthe daily life, the social life, the spiritual life and the universe. Moreover, somerepresentative examples will be analyzed in the thesis. The research trys to findout what strategies have been adopted by Sidney Shapiro and what methodshave been used to fulfil this strategy. What’s more, what influence the Englishversion has made will be covered. Shapiro`s version is highly praised for itssmoothness and ease, but it doesn't mean domestiation takes a leader position inhis version. In fact, he used more foreignization strategy. So the best way is tomake a combination between foreignization and domestication. Make full use ofthe advantages and avoide the disadvantages of domestication andforeignization to realize the goal of translation.62534

1. IntroductionShui Hu Zhuan is one of the Four Great Classic Novels in China. It was written byShi Nai’an and Luo Guanzhong in the fourteenth century in the late Yuan Dynasty and theearly Ming Dynasty. The language of Shui Hu Zhuan takes vernacular language as its basictool, and it contains a lot of Chinese common sayings. Both the language of the writer and thelanguage spoken by the characters are vivid and full of life.Shui Hu Zhuan has beentranslated to a lot of foreign countries and is highly praised all around the world. Among itsseveral English versions , Sidney Shapiro’s Outlaws ofthe Marsh is the most popular one.He prefers to use domestiation translation . However, his translation is far from being stiff, butvery flexible. In this thesis,we analyse the translation of Chinese common sayings from the view ofdomestication and foreignization. First ,we give a brief introduction of the Chinese commonsayings. It covers the research data. We will analyze some impressive examples of thecommon sayings to figure out what strategies and methods are adoptes by Shapiro. Then ananalysis is given to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of domestication andforeignization strategies. At last ,we reach the conclusion.2. Literature Review2.1 The Definition of Foreignization and DomesticationIn the West, the idea that translating was “just an action between two differentlanguages”(Gentzler,1993:46) held by the traditional translation research led to the eternaldiscussion between literal translation and free translation. Then, with the appearance of cultureturn of translation research in the 1970s, translation researchers started to realize that“translating was an action which could cross the chlture”(Tytler, 1978:26). As a result, thediscussion between foreignization and domestication occurred. Then we come to foreignization and domestication in China, WangDongfeng(2002:24)says : “in China, there occurred three heavy debates over domesticationand foreignization: the debate over Wen( 文 )and Zhi( 质 )in the translation of Buddhist scriptures, the debate over literal translation and free translation of 1920s-1980s and thedebate over domestication and foreignization in the present translation study circle.”源:自*751`%论,文'网·www.751com.cn/ 归化与异化视角下《水浒传》沙博理译本中汉语俗语的翻译研究:http://www.751com.cn/yingyu/lunwen_68791.html
