Title A Study on English Film Subtitle Translation and Constraints of Subtitle Translation—A Case Study of Lie to Me

Abstract

This paper begins with the previous studies of the feature of English film subtitle translation. It also analyzes the constraints of English film subtitle translation based on previous studies. This paper suggests that the final purpose of subtitle translation is to help the audience enjoy the film, the translators should try to make the language concise, clear, fluent, and let the audience get more information at the cost of relatively minimal cognitive efforts at the same time. Assisting with examples, it illustrates and discusses difficulties in English movie subtitle translation. In the end, it raises a question, which is how to avoid constraints in the process of subtitle translation. Moreover, it offers some strategies in translation. This paper presents an analysis of subtitling translation from both practical and theoretical perspective, and a tentative exploration has been made in an effort to regulate and improve subtitling translation by communication translation theory. The paper discusses the characteristics of film subtitles and restriction from the perspective of linguistics. According to the restriction and the characteristics of film translation, the paper puts forward the corresponding solution strategies.
