Ⅰ. Introduction
Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club is a masterpiece in Chinese-American literature. Through the stories of The Joy Luck Club, the lives of four Chinese immigrant mothers and their American-born daughters are shown in front of the readers. Conflict is the main plot in The Joy Luck Club, and mothers and their daughters have many conflicts. The mothers that have had suffered many hardships and tortures in old China put all their hopes on their daughters. However, daughters were completely indifferent to their mothers’ considerable efforts and always go against their mothers’ wishes. They do not want to be confined and do some things at the mercy of their own mothers. Because of the two generations are born and grow up in different cultural environments, the mothers are deeply influenced by the traditional Chinese culture, while their daughters are born and get educated in the United States, whose culture is a completely different one. Thus conflicts have become something that prevents the understanding and communication between mothers and daughters. In fact, the conflicts between mothers and daughters reflect the conflicts of the family education between China and America.
Education is a social activity of cultivation and the inheritance of experiences in the daily life. It is a sort of social culture phenomenon which reflects different social cultural implications. In a sense, cultural transmission is education. Family, school and social education are the three main part of the education. But family education should not be replaced by school and social education. When children were born they had been in the atmosphere of family education. Generally speaking, it indicates that behaviors of criticism, guidance, cultivation and administration by the parents. It plays an important role not only in model values but also in cultivating an unique quality to our children. Chinese culture attaches importance to the harmony between human and nature but Americans pay more attention to overcoming the nature by them. The family education between China and America exists a significant difference. For example, in the mutual relationship of family members, Chinese parents are almost in the dominant position. but American parents attach more importance to getting along with their kids equally. About the concept of childcare, Chinese parents almost hope their kids can find a good job to be prosperous, in the future but American parents lay stresses on promoting their kids’ capability of living adaptation. About the ways of education between China and America, Chinese parents are willing to undertake the whole things for giving their kids more time to spend on study, but American parents tend to make their children do many practical things all by themselves. The disparities between two countries lead to the living adaptation of Chinese children inferior to American children. It is meaningful to promote children to grow healthily and enhance their own integral quality. So we should better understand and take examples by employing foreign advanced means of education for children. “the methods of education are the choice for a certain social culture. ” (Laughton 54) Through the comparison of education between China an America, we can analyze the distinctions between two countries in cross-culture communication. 《喜福会》中美家庭教育差异:http://www.751com.cn/yingyu/lunwen_7449.html
