Abstract
Nowadays, paper dictionaries and electronic dictionaries play an important part in college students’ life. This study aims to study their effects on the vocabulary use of the writing of English majors. Thirty junior students majoring in English participated in the study. Then the digital version of these compositions was analyzed by a web program, examining the persity and complexity of vocabulary in these compositions, which were represented by the most frequent 2000 words, academic words ratio as well as lexical density. SPSS software was also used to analyze the data. The results showed that the use of dictionary, either in electronic or paper form, doesn’t improve the lexical variation and sophistication of the participants’ writing. The paper analyzed the possible reasons for the results and then come up with a few solutions to tackle with the use of dictionary.

1 Introduction
1.1 Background
English writing ability is a significant indicator of the comprehensive competence of English majors, thus the improvement of writing ability will benefit English majors in integrative aspects. With the increasing application of technology in the process of English acquisition, more and more college students are using electronic dictionary in English study, especially in the process of English writing, while the paper dictionary seems less convenient and out of date. Electronic dictionary has some advantages for students who have limited time to look up the dictionary with a vague impression for a certain word and for students who are eager to learn the latest vocabulary entries. What’s more, electronic dictionary has integrated Artificial Intelligence Technology and Intelligent Technology, which help students enhance the efficiency of English study and satisfies the inpidual needs of students. On the other hand, paper dictionary has a full range of vocabulary entries and clear explanations, thus it can use model sentences to illustrate the meaning of a word. In other words, paper dictionaries can be used to help students retain the word form, as the continuous rehearsal of the word form during the look-up process will help vocabulary learning (Hulstijn, 2001: 69). These two different kinds of dictionaries both have advantages and disadvantages. This paper aimed, by experiment, to study on the use of different kinds of dictionaries in writing English compositions, and find out methods to cultivate English majors’ abilities both for English writing and information searching. 纸质字典与电子字典对英语专业学生写作的影响:http://www.751com.cn/yingyu/lunwen_10535.html
