摘 要20世纪,美国语言学家柏林和凯恩发表了著作《基本颜色词的普遍性和发展史》,首次研究“红色”词汇在中西方之间的差异。本文采用对比分析的方法,说明红色词汇在英语和汉语中的相似性和差异性。本文列举了英语和汉语中的一些红色词语的实例,从语义的角度它们对进行分析,并从认知和文化的角度找出造成红色语义相似和不同的原因。通过对比分析,可以得出准确理解颜色词文化势在必行。这不仅有利于提高英语学习水平,还对促进和加强中西方文化之间的交流和融合有一定的指导意义。28770

Abstract In the 20th century, the American linguist Berlin and Kane published a book, whose name is The Universality and Development History of Basic Color Terms. And this book studied differences of “red” words between Chinese and English for the first time. This paper adopts the method of comparative analysis to illustrate the similarities and differences of red words in English and Chinese, lists some examples of red terms in both English and Chinese, tries to find the similarities and differences between them from the angle of semantics, and analyzes the reasons about these similarities and differences from the perspective of the cognition and culture. Through comparison and analysis, we can draw a conclusion that it is imperative to understand exactly of the cultural meaning of color terms. This is not only to improve the level of English learning, but also to promote and strengthen the cultural exchanges between China and the West, which has important guiding significance to the cultural fusion.

I. Introduction
     John Lyons said: “Language is always related to certain cultural history. Language is the key of literature. All kinds of languages can only be acknowledged in the mixed cultural background, language and culture are always being study together” (55). Therefore, when learn the vocabulary, we should not only concern about its basic meaning, but also pay attention to the associative meaning. Some sociologists also called it “social-cultural meaning”. As the most abundant vocabulary of various languages, the color word occupies an important position in each nation’s language and culture. Different nations give these with different culture connotations. The contrastive analysis of red words in both English and Chinese will be a good chance for both English and Chinese learners to comprehend the similarities and differences. If not, these differences can cause possible meanings, and result in misunderstanding.
Mastering the associative meaning is important, which can help to learn English. Compared with literal meaning, associative meaning is unstable and not inherent. But it has an additional in the rational meaning. It differs from man to man, varies from time to time, and varies depending on the nationality, faith, race and so on.
