1 Introduction
1.1 Research Background
Self-translation is a special kind of translating activity, with a history of more than two thousand years. Chen Jirong(2009) announces, based on its translating property and particularity, self-translation is one kind of translating activity conducted by the writer. It involves two main parts which are separately the special strategy adopted in the translating process and the final result of translating activity. The writer translates his or her works into another language, during which the topic and language information of the original text should be accurately and completely expressed in the target text, and at the same time, the dual context and the literary continuity should be taken into consideration. It is very obvious that self-translation sets very demanding requirements for both the self-translator and the works derived from self-translation. In addition to such requirements, the self-translator could also enjoy much more rights based on the particularity of self-translation. In the course of self-translating, the self-translator plays the dual role of both writer and translator, which fundamentally endows him much more freedom than other translators. And as the writer of source text, it is certain that the translator has no difficulty in understanding the content, which rules out the possibility that translators have no other choice but to adopt literal translation under the circumstance that they can not understand the original text totally and only dare to choose conservative and safe translating way. As a result, the self-translator could employ a variety of translating strategies to reach the translating goal.
1.2 Significance of the Study
With the development of globalization, more and more people could master at least two kinds of language, from which we could predict that self-translation would get more and more popular as time goes by. In the future, there must be more and more people devoting to the self-translating work. It is very urgent to carry on further analysis on this field. However, certain study on self-translation has not yet got as much attention as it deserves in our country. Thus the study on self-translation, especially from the perspective of skopos theory, seems very important. This paper accordingly picks up the special aspect, the perspective of skopos theory, to explore the possible translating strategies which could be used in the self-translation. It is sure this paper could give some guidance to the relevant study or practice of self-translation in the future.
1.3 Layout of the Paper
The paper will be pided into six parts for discussion. In chapter one, readers could get the basic information of the paper, like the research background, research meaning and general structure of the paper. In chapter two, the literature review will have a brief introduction of both the domestic and the foreign study on self-translation as well as describe the relevant study on the chosen novel. In chapter three, readers will be shown the theoretical foundation of the paper, involving the development of skopos theory as well as its three main rules. In chapter four, the paper will briefly summarizes Eileen’s translating life. Meanwhile, the origin of the chosen novel, The Rouge of the North, will also be shown in this part. In chapter five, the author will concentrate on discussing about the specific translating skills adopted in the novel based on skopos theory. In chapter six, the paper will sum up the translating skills could be used in self-translation in the light of skopos theory based on the analysis in chapter five. 目的论视角下的张爱玲自译《怨女》自译研究(2):http://www.751com.cn/yingyu/lunwen_25805.html
