I. Introduction
Proverbs are short sentences which can reflect people’s life and working experiences. Most of them are full of nation’s cultural characteristics. They are popular sayings that have been handed down from generation to generation. They’re vivid, simple and concise. They describe the social phenomenon, accurate interpretation of natural law, explained human customs, thoughts and feelings. Appropriately quoted proverbs can make language more beautiful, vivid and expressive. People can grasp a good saying to a life management. Western people said what flowers are to garden, spices to food, gems to a garment and stars to heaven, such are proverbs interwoven in speech(陈78).Without them, language would lack spirit and color.
At present, this thesis attempts to study proverbs in order to diminish misunderstanding and conflicts among people with different cultural background. They aimed at finding the most suitable strategies. But Chinese and English belong to two different language systems whose cultural backgrounds are so different from each other. So what is evident and understandable for the Chinese may turn to be obscure for the English. 浅谈英汉谚语文化差异及翻译策略:http://www.751com.cn/yingyu/lunwen_26019.html
