Abstract Jane Austen is the most successful female novelist in the 19th century and Pride and Prejudice is her representative work whose dialogue is an important mean to shape the personality of the characters. This paper will apply Grice’s conversational implicature theory and cooperative principle to analyze how the conversational implicature in Pride and Prejudice is generated and how to understand it as well as to explain the reason why the speakers use the indirect way to convey their thoughts and real emotions. The introduction of pragmatics can not only deduce the different characters of the roles in the novel but also provide language studies with a brand-new theoretical perspective.

I. Introduction
Jane Austen (1775—1817), one of the most famous female novelists during the 19th century, gets a great reputation all over the world. She is especially good at using free indirect speech and creating bountiful conversational implicature. During her life, Austen has finished six novels which mainly focus on woman’s marriage and the squire life. Thanks to woman’s unique sensitive observation and a lot of vivid sentences, she seriously depicts the inner world and the environment around her. Among all her six novels, nearly every one has a simple plot, light style, and a distinct personality of the characters.
As the most remarkable literary classics in her whole life, Pride and Prejudice, which is Jane Austen’s favorite work according to her sister’s letter, has created a huge success after its born. Enjoying its sincere love story, clear characters and the intricate plot, ordinary readers are usually addicted to it heart-deeply. However, some academic researchers become more interested in other aspects, for instance, the striking characters, meaningful conversations, the sentences filled with irony and satire, love and marriage, property, sense of hierarchy and so on. The varied and abundant studies have become mellow and rich except from the view of linguistics approaches which are still on the way. What’s more, in current essays and reviews, people always overlook careful analysis on the rich implications of the dialogues in Pride and Prejudice. This paper aims to analyze the dialogues in detail from the view of pragmatics, especially from the theory of conversational implicature and the cooperative principle, to have a try to make some possible suggestions. 会话含义理论下《傲慢与偏见》中的对话分析:http://www.751com.cn/yingyu/lunwen_30785.html
