Abstract Thomas Hardy is a brilliant novelist and poet in British Literature. He lives at the turning point of the century and writes in a time of difficult social changes, thus he is also regarded as a transitional writer. Tess of the D'Urbervilles is the most famous novel of Thomas Hardy, the theme of this novel is a great challenge to the Victorian society order and resist, a representation of the late Victorian social conflict and a struggle between the old and new values.
The novels of Hardy have been attracting many experts and scholars’ interest and argument for his creations of character and environment and his ideas of age, society, religion, etc. Comparatively, few of them studied his ideas of society and religion through his image shaping, especially the image of the pastors. Therefore, this paper tries to interpret Tess by analyzing the image of the pastor and the contexts, eventually, attempts to dig out Hardy’s view on the religion in that particular age and draw some conclusions about the religious influence on literary works .
The paper falls into five parts. The first part gives an introduction. The second part shows some findings about Tess. The third part aims at analyzing the image of the pastors in Tess. The fourth part would be the interpretation of the pastors from the background and the perspective of the author. The fifth part serves as conclusion paragraph.
