He has made considerable contribution to the development of detective fiction. One of his works, Die Gordische Schleife, won the Glauser Prize (de) in 1989. In 1995 the publication of his novel The Reader (Der Vorleser) aroused the attention of the world. It is about a teenager who has an affair with a woman in her thirties who suddenly vanishes but whom he meets again as a law student when visiting a trial about Nazi war crimes. The story of The Reader is plain and simple, but it does not overshadow its dignity. With the simple narrative methods, it expresses rich themes. Sex, love, reading, knowledge, life, humanity, all can be seen as the key words of this novel. At the same time, none of them can explain the meaning of the novel completely. The author once talked in an interview which printed in the Chinese version interpreted by Qiandingping (Qiandingping, 2000:11), “this novel is too personalized to become best seller; but as the international best seller, it is too Germanic.” With its openness and thinking magnificence, the Reader has been translated into more than 30 kinds of language, stepping over different ages, educational levels and various historical and cultural backgrounds, and attracts countless readers of various skin colors. The Reader is not only the novel with the theme of fighting against fascist and it also has deep understanding of humanity and deeply reflects on the possible inheritance of Nazi "crime". This paper is to apply the metaphor theory and integrate it into the analysis of this novel. This paper will first analyze the main characters of Michael Berg and Hanna Schmitz, and then explore metaphorical meaning of “reading” in three parts. It will continue to explore the enlightenment meaning of The Reader to the German nation. 41000
