Abstract Vocabulary is the basic unit of language. The improvements of English listening, speaking, reading and writing ability all depend on the English vocabulary learning. Vocabulary memorization has a pivotal position in foreign language teaching and learning, and it is also the biggest difficulty for foreign language learners. Therefore, it is of vital importance to find out the effective methods of mastering vocabulary. This paper will focus on exploring the effective memorizing strategies of English vocabulary by analyzing specific examples. Based on the vocabulary learning strategies, the paper cities a variety of vocabulary memorizing methods, such as association, rhythm, and classification. According to  the circulating memory management and circulating review arrangements, this paper concludes some systematic and effective vocabulary memory methods and strategies, by way of combing memorizing methods with its rules, which will greatly enhance the efficiency of students’ learning.

On the Choices and Application of English Vocabulary Memorizing Methods

I. Introduction

With the rapid economic development in different regions, English learning is becoming more popular and more essential. As a medium for human communication, English is playing an important role in our daily life, which draws more and more attention. The main function of English learning is to help people communicate with each other and give them chances to learn about language application, culture and habits of other countries. Therefore, how to learn and master English remains an important issue. Vocabulary is an important object of English learning and occupies a very important position in the whole process of English learning. As the linguists D.A. Wilkins described, “Without grammar, little can be conveyed, without vocabulary, nothing can be conveyed”(21). More and more English teachers and foreign language learners have realized its importance. Memorizing vocabulary is the biggest difficulty in English learning because English vocabulary is huge, and each has a variety of usages and each of them contains more than one meaning. Therefore, the mastery of vocabulary is an essential process in English learning. Students spare no efforts and spend lots of time in learning English, especially learning vocabulary, but its unsatisfactory effect and  low efficiency can hardly meet their needs and efforts.
