The Analysis of Symbolism in Robert Frost’s Poetry
I. Introduction
The symbolism is an art of adopting symbols especially by investing things with a symbolic meaning or by expressing the invisible or intangible by means of visible or sensuous representations. The Symbolism Movement, as a literature movement originated during the 1850s in France, created a public sensation in the following decades and until 1900 its momentum began to diminish. During this period it exerted a profound influence on twentieth-century literature, and bridged the transition from realism to modernism.
Robert Frost, one of the greatest American poets, is keen on the symbolism which just exists as the cell of Robert Frost’s poems and connects with his works intensely. He masterly employs symbolism which makes his poems carry a far-reaching philosophy idea. He transfers the ordinary scenes and things that he distills from life into his poems, but he makes them typical and distract so that even the most ordinary thing can evoke people’s mediation and provoke people’s thought. Just as Joseph Brosdsky observed, these poems are seemingly simple, complicate indeed. His poetry is a source of comfort and inspiration. His mode of expression is symbolic and indirect. Robert Frost’s technique of communication is essentially symbolic and oblique. His poems are all symbolic and reveal layers within layers of meaning on a careful reading. Thus, Frost is simple and complex, obvious and obscure.
However, most critics and scholars place focuses on his theme, attribution, artistic approach, or merely on concrete techniques and rhetorical devices. Indeed, his poems deserve the acclaim “still waters run deep.” In the veil of symbolism, he detects the profound and sensible philosophy. Thus, this paper attempts to analyze the symbolism embodied in Frost’s poems, trying to discover the earnest wisdom and profound life philosophy between the lines. 浅析罗伯特•弗罗斯特诗歌中的象征主义:http://www.751com.cn/yingyu/lunwen_32077.html
