Since our country is a developing country, many big cities pay little attention to the translations of public signs. There are several problems in the translations: First the English translations of public signs are a mess because of the absence of the professional institution; second, the English translations of public signs are not professional for the low level of translators. These problems lead to the confusion of public signs, and it is unfavorable to enhance the city image. The most important is that China has five thousand years of glorious history. As a nation of ceremonies, we should not only leave a better impression to the foreigners, but also propaganda our Chinese culture through appropriate translations of public signs. Therefore, this paper studies the English translations of public signs from the perspective of skopostheorie to help people to realize the importance of this problem. At the same time, based on the analysis, this paper puts forward some corresponding solutions from the view of skopostheorie.
