3.4 Cultural functions
Although some games are too simple to have its own culture and style, most games creates a cultural environment within the game, which is designed to impress players. The translation should conform to the style or culture so that the translated versions express the same information and stylistic effect as the original text. Many games are designed in a fictitious setting with strong foreign cultural symbolism. In these games, translation should take account of the cultural differences and make them more close to Chinese players.
E.g. Helios is the god of sun in western myth. In the game a power station named after this is called HELIOS I. Sun symbolizes light and energy, so it is natural for native speakers to understand the name is a power station. While there is no such a deity in Chinese literature, it is better to be translated as 太阳神一号电站, conveying both its name and its function.
3.5 Professionalism
Different games have different backgrounds and terminologies. For example, war games may include many terms related to weapon and battle; basketball games to sports; and wizard games to spell and magic. It required the professional knowledge of translators in order not to miscomprehend and mistranslate the terms. Otherwise, some special terms may be mistranslated and thus lead to ambiguity.
