Abstract Alice Sebold, the author of The Lovely Bones, is regarded as one of the newly-rising stars and the most potential writers in the 21st century. The Lovely Bones, her representative novel, was published in 2002. Focusing on the huge shift and intention course of the whole family after the death of Susie, the novel explains how they gradually overcome their trauma and begin their new life after suffering from the traumatic loss. Through textual analysis, this thesis centers around Susie’s father Jack, who has the most obvious suffering and change.

The thesis is made up of five parts. The first part briefly introduces the author Alice Sebold and the novel The Lovely Bones, literature review on this novel both at home and abroad, theoretical framework applied in the thesis as well as the originality and structure of the thesis. The second part focuses on the traumatic symptoms of Father Jack when he heard the sad news, including his attitudes towards his past, present and future. Part three discusses and analyses what he suffers from and how he feels in the healing process. This part highlights how he gradually confronts the reality and slowly goes from the trauma to the recovery. Part four understands and explores his balanced state after the recovery from the trauma. This part is also about his different attitudes towards his past, present and future, forming a contrast to his traumatic symptoms. The last part is a conclusion of the thesis which restates the thesis statement and major findings.41040

摘要艾丽斯西伯德被世人认为是21世纪小说界的新星和最有潜力的小说家。其代表作《可爱的骨头》发表于2002年。小说聚焦于苏茜一家人在经历灾难后所遭受的巨变和心路历程，阐述了他们如何在十年的精神折磨后，一步步地克服创伤，走上崭新的生活。本文采用文本分析的方法，聚焦于死者苏茜的父亲——杰克，围绕这个在突如其来的灾难到来时感受最深刻、受到的影响最广泛的“受害者”。
