On the Themes about Love and Nature of Emily Dickinson’ s Poems

    Chapter One  Introduction

    1.1 Background of the research

Ever since the dawn of human history, poetry has served as a kind of communicational activity between different peoples. Nowadays, because of the rapid development of internalization and globalization, poetry is playing an increasingly important role between different countries, especially in the aspect of cross-cultural exchanges. Though literature and poetry are topics heatedly discussed during the long history of human civilization in both China and western countries, there is so far no satisfactory ways to demonstrate in literary classics. Therefore, the study on poetry now is far from enough and still has a long way to go.源`自·751.文/论:文'网,www.751com.cn

    1.2About Emily Dickinson

Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) is one of the most extraordinary poets of all times. Although leading a life of seclusion, Emily Dickinson has composed many poems in which her sharp and unique understanding of the world is depicted. Her poems are mainly concerned about love, religion, nature and death. Of all 1775 poems published in 1995 by Thomas Johnson, more than 500 are about nature. Being influenced by two conflicting thoughts of her time, her nature-themed poems are paradoxical complexes of both thoughts- Puritanism and Transcendentalism.

    1.3 Significance of the study

Just as what has been said above, poetry is of great importance in cultural exchanges, among which literary classics poetry is an ubiquitous way to promote one nation’s glorious and splendid culture.
