Effect of Phonics on Vocabulary Learning of Primary School Students in China Abstract For English beginners, it is of great importance to lay a solid foundation of phonics and own a large vocabulary. In China, the teaching practice reveals that it is of great difficulty for students to spell and read words by themselves, and that a large quantity of students has no idea of the relations between pronunciation and spelling, which leads to the situation where students memorize English words mechanically and inefficiently.
Phonics of English has aroused wide attention in language teaching in the west, which proves to b effective. But most of the research objects are those who learn English as the mother tongue or second language, instead of those who regard English as foreign language. Based on previous research findings on phonics, this paper pide 60 grade three students in Hangzhou into two groups.One is the control group and taught with traditional teaching method, while another is the experiment group and taught with phonics, each group having pre-test and post-test in order to assess whether the vocabulary learning level has been raised, and thus to observe the relations between phonics and vocabulary learning. 46693
The great progress of the experiment group compared with the control group in the post-test indicates that Phonics is effective on the vocabulary learning of students who learn English as a foreign language. According to the research findings, this paper also come up with some suggestions on how to learn vocabulary for primary school students better with the help of phonics.

关于自然拼读法对中国小学生词汇学习有效性的研究
摘要对于英语初学者来说,奠定良好的语音和词汇基础至关重要。中国的教学实践显示,很多学生很难进行独立拼读单词,缺乏对英语单词读音和拼写关系的认识,这就导致了低效率地机械记忆英语单词。
英语自然拼读法在西方语言教学领域已引起广泛关注,但大多数研究对象是以英语为母语的英语初学者,而对以英语作为外语的初学者的研究还比较少。结合前人在自然拼读法方面的研究成果,本文以60名杭州市三年级小学生为研究对象。将学生分为对照组和实验组,每组30人,进行为期8周的英语教学。 对照组以传统的授课方式授课,实验组以自然拼读法进行授课。两组各自进行前测和后测以及课堂观察来评估词汇学习水平的提高程度,目的是观察自然拼读法和词汇学习的关系。
数据分析显示,相比控制组,实验组在后测中取得更大的进步,这证实了自然拼读法对于将英语作为外语的中国小学生来说,是有助于词汇学习的。最后本文根据研究结果提出了相应的如何利用自然拼读法帮助中国小学生更好地进行英语词汇学习的建议。
