    Abstract A new English Curriculum Criterion in Compulsory Phase (for experimental use) had been published in China in 2001 September. It requires us to have a new understanding of the primary school English teaching. And it also suggests that the goal of primary school English teaching is to arouse students’ interests in learning English. Story-theme English teaching method is an ideal way to develop students’ learning interests, which is suitable for children’s physiological and psychological development. Based on the literature review, the thesis mainly analyzes the necessity of using story-theme English teaching, the principles and implementing steps.  Finally, the author sums up the limitations and suggestions and its practical applications. Teachers as the initiators should use story-theme English teaching method rationally to develop students’ learning interests in English.62418

    摘要2001年9月,新的《义务教育阶段英语课程标准》(实验稿)出台,基础教育课程实验推广工作全面启动。在新课程标准中,小学英语的教学目标为培养学生学习英语的兴趣。故事主题教学法符合小学生生理和心理特点,是一种非常理想的培养学生兴趣的教学方法。笔者在文献研究的基础之上,重点分析了故事主题教学法的必要性,教学原则和操作步骤,以及关于故事主题在实际中的应用。最后总结出故事主题教学法的局限及建议,旨在说明,教师作为小学生英语学习的启蒙者应合理组织运用故事主题教学法来培养学生对英语的兴趣。

    1. Introduction

    At present, the new curriculum reform is further in-depth and the isolated mechanical English Teaching pattern has been eliminated by the times. English teaching are more and more focusing on the practical use of language: not only the application of language in practical use, but also learning by doing or doing by learning. Owing to the special nature of pupils’ physical and mental characteristics, abundant and interesting stories are becoming indispensable parts of English classroom teaching in primary schools. Story teaching method has been much more applied into primary English teaching. 

    It is demonstrated that story teaching method is an effective way of English teaching. But the question is that the current domestic theory researches on teaching stories are incomplete because of the short-time popularity of English in primary schools. As a result, traditional story English teaching method theory features messy, trivial, unsystematic and so on. What’s more, the traditional English teaching has flaws itself,such as the emphasis of language knowledge, stereotyped teaching models and mechanical teaching procedures.
