Abstract The Good Earth is a masterpiece of Pearl S. Buck, an American female novelist. The novel describes the rural life in northern China in 1930s，showing readers the rising and declining of a farmer family based on the earth. By doing so, the novel successfully makes Chinese farmers known by the world. This thesis intends to analyze the image of O-lan in The Good Earth by depicting the miserable fate and experience of her. O-lan is a typical traditional woman in The Good Earth who has a tragic fate. She was sold to a rich family by her own parents when she was quite young, which was the beginning of her tragic fate; She works hard and brings up the children in her marriage but still cannot persuade her husband not to marry concubine ; and last, she dies. By the depiction of internal and external causes of O-lan’s miserable fate, we can conclude that O-lan is diligent, wise and kindhearted, but her obedience makes her tragic fate unavoidable, and that in Buck’s eyes women can’t escape from miserable fate in early 1900s’ patriarchal society. At that time, the Chinese feudal culture is still deeply rooted in remote rural areas and affects people’s thoughts and actions there. As an American woman writer, Pearl S. Buck characterizes a traditional Chinese woman farmer image based on her knowing about Chinese farmers. So Pearl is actually describing a real China from the perspectives of Chinese and also from the point of culture.32191

摘要《大地》是美国女小说家赛珍珠优秀作品。小说描述了20世界30年代中国北方农村的生活，展示了一个以土地为基础的家族的兴衰过程，把勤劳淳朴的中国农民形象带进了世界文学舞台。阿兰是小说《大地》中一个有着悲剧命运的典型的中国传统女性形象，她的命运实际上是中国传统女性的命运。本文旨在通过阐述阿兰一生悲剧命运和经历的来分析阿兰的悲剧形象。阿兰自幼被父母卖入有钱人家，这是她悲剧命运的开始。和王龙结婚后任劳任怨，生儿育女却依然无法改变王龙纳妾的命运。最后，阿兰悄无声息地死去。阿兰的命运世纪是中国传统女性命运的写照。本论文通过分析造成阿兰悲剧命运的内部和外部原因来说明，阿兰勤劳能够、善良聪明，性格上却逆来顺受，从来不反抗家人对自己命运的安排，这使她的悲剧无法避免。同时，在赛珍珠的笔下的20世纪早期的中国男权社会里，封建文化依然深深地根植在中国的偏远农村地区,女性最终难逃悲惨命运。做为一个美国作家，赛珍珠通过她对中国传统女性的了解塑造了阿兰的形象，她在用中国人的视角，以文化为切入点描写真实的中国。

Tragic Fate of O-lan in The Good Earth
Introduction
Pearl S. Buck, an American female writer, was famous for her novels about China. She was born in America but grew up in China. She lived in China for more than 40 years, so she was very interested and deeply affected by Chinese culture. In 1917, she married John Lossing Buck and they moved to Suzhou in rural Anhui province. In early 1900s, Suzhou was a remote rural area where the Chinese revolution had little influence and feudal culture was still deeply rooted. People were strictly restricted by the feudal culture especially women. Buck lived in Suzhou for many years, and she gathered the materials which she later used in The Good Earth.
