Before marriage, Mrs. Morel was a schoolmistress, which was the same profession as Lawrence's own mother. This kind of profession was a respectable job, maybe it was a good matching to Coppards and to Mrs. Morel's pride. So it is difficult to imagine a good upbringing schoolmistress living with a crude, uneducated man, and it is easy to infer that what her fate would be when she really marries such a man.
Maybe Lawrence may define Mrs. Morel's profession as a teacher just on his mother's account or some other reasons, but anyhow, her work before marriage is a sharp contrast to her husband's character after marriage, which is a major reason of her tragic fate. If she could marry a gentle man of good quality and good temper, things would change a lot.
Actually, Mrs. Morel had a short love before her marriage. The man was called John Field, who was a man without his own mind. Mr. John wanted to be a ministry but his father wanted him to be a businessman. Because his father had been ruined in business, John had to be a teacher in Norwood. Mrs. Morel didn't hear of him, until two years later, she made determined inquiry. He had married his landlady, a woman of forty, a widow of property.
There is no doubt Mrs. Morel loved him, but as such a proud and arrogant woman, she just kept this memory intact in her inner heart, for her own sake, to her dying day. For thirty-five years, she did not speak of him.
2.2 Mrs. Morel’s Life After Marriage
Mrs. Morel was acquainted with her husband at a Christmas party when she was twenty-three years old, Mr. Morel was then twenty-seven years old. He was well setup, erect, and very smart. He had wavy black hair, and a vigorous black beard that had never been shaved. His cheeks were ruddy, and his red, moist mouth was noticeable because he laughed so often and so heartily. He had rare thing, a rich, ringing laugh. Mrs. Morel had watched him, fascinated. All of Mr. Morel's behaviour at that night attracted Mrs. Morel very much. Whether his behaviour is natural or showy, the two fell in love with each other at the very night.
The next Christmas they were married. From the moment of their marriage, Mrs. Morel's fate changed. The marriage began, the endless quarrel began, and the tragedy began. This marriage is a wrong marriage, and the marriage is the main cause of Mrs. Morel's tragic fate.
