The Motives of Emily’s murder in A Rose for Emily Abstract William Faulkner is famous for his excellent narrative skills in his works. In this thesis, I discuss one of his masterpieces--A Rose for Emily, and I focus on the motives of Emily’s murder. Faulkner uses a special narrative to confuse readers’ understanding of Homer Barron’s death. Therefore, Chapter I talks about how are we cheated by author. Faulkner makes the plots of novel inauthentic by complex narrative time order,mutable narrator and mutable narrative perspective. Chapter II discusses my interpretation of Emily’s murder from the perspective of Emily, and reaches a different understanding on the murder motives of Emily, that is, She killed the man due to the influence of her father and society, rather than a decline of her marriage. Chapter III studies on Emily’s murder motives from the perspective of town people, which also proof the argument of this thesis.46755

1. Introduction
A Rose for Emily is one of the most famous novel written by William Faulkner. It came out 70 years ago, but there are still many scholars studying on its theme to find out the secrets behind “rose” and “Emily”.
This short story took place after Civil War. Emily，an aristocratic Southern woman，is still single at the age of 30 because of her father’s tyrannical control． After her father’s death，she begins to date with Homer，a Northern foreman. At last，she kills him and tucks his body upstairs in her bridal room. Many people have talked about Emily’s tragedy. There is no doubt that her father’s influence in her whole life contribute to the tragic ending.
However, very few people have talked about the reason why Emily killed her lover Homer Barron, and most readers blame the killing on Emily’s being abandoned by Homer. When we connect the cause of Emily’s tragedy with the motives of her murder, we will find this killing is not simple. We are all cheated by author’s superb narrative technique.
My thesis is going to analyze the murder motives of Emily from the perspectives of Emily herself and other town people. In addition, I will take this novel’s theme into consideration. These are used to support my thesis——She killed the man due to the influence of her father and society, rather than a decline of her marriage.
