    As we know, Language is the most important means of human communication, and communication is the most important function of language. Spoken English, as a demonstration of a person’s overall ability to use English, is an important part of daily interaction. The significance of oral English lies in the effect of its use of highest frequency in communication, and consequently how to enhance effectively the students’ proficiency in spoken English should be put in the top position in English teaching. Therefore, the ultimate goal of language instruction is to equip the learners with the ability to use the language for communication.

    It is a fact that the traditional principle of spoken English teaching is based on ‘Three Ps’ Methodology: Presentation-Practice-Production. However, how does one ‘practice’ narrative evaluation? How does one ‘produce’ discourse markers naturally? How does one ‘present’ transaction boundaries?(Lin 3) By asking those questions, we note that the ‘Three Ps’ teaching method seems not so effective in spoken English teaching. Hence, Lin in his book proposes an alternative methodology to supplement the 'Three Ps' named 'Three Is', which is as follows: Illustration-Interaction-Induction. Illustration means looking at real data where possible. Interaction means talking among learners and teachers about language, sharing and forming views, breaking down cultural barriers and stereotypes. Induction means drawing conclusions.
    There are some suggestions for English majors to train good speaking skills. Primarily, students arouse a high interest to learn English. They should lay a solid foundation such as correct pronunciation, large vocabulary and good grammar, etc. In the course of learning English, the students should pay more attention to increase general knowledge, improve habits and skills in English listening, and raise reading speed. Meanwhile students learn to get rid of the mother tongue interference. And the last thing is to do more practice .To make great progress in one kind of language ability, one cannot depend only on the time in class. It is very important, especially for English majors, to learn to study independently. If all the things are done well in spoken English, one’s English speaking level will be improved.

    II. The Present Situation of English Majors’ Oral English

    There is no doubt that the English is very important and popular among the students on the college campuses, especially the spoken English. In fact, this kind of vigor has been flourished since China began its policy of reform and openness. What’s more, the English which is the international language is becoming more and more crucial in every fluid with the global economy’ development. Of course, it is becoming a more widely used language spoken by Chinese with its entry the WTO. Obviously, there are so few people who can speak English freely and fluently that many well-paid jobs are passing. 2008 is an important year for China who held the Olympic Games, and the wind of learning English became the whole nation’s interest and a task to some degree. Because no one wanted to aspirate this good opportunity to show our country’s old history, ancient culture, modern city, beautiful scene and kind hearts to the world. As the active volunteers and pioneers, the college students have been paying more attention to such international events, because speaking English well not only means more excellent opportunity and a very useful certificate, but also a good job in the future. So some of them work hard and attend kinds of training classes. However, the result is usually not as good as they thought which disappoints the students and the employers. Many graduates who getting high marks on the papers and bring sorts of certificates such as CET4 , CET6 and TEM4 are still in troubling finding satisfactory jobs and solving the simple problems meeting a foreigner which just requires the basic communication skills and oral ability. Reading the newspaper paper as you want , you will realize how significant the oral English is for the college students . In 2005, 11 graduate students who received top mark in the NCEE were refused by Hong Kong University because of their poor spoken English. In 2006, Mckinsey (Consultation Company) reported that the oral English ability has become one of the most important factors for the college graduates in searching the jobs. These convincing facts surprises everyone who impels many students to indulge them to morning reading, English corner, English training classes and kinds of tests aiming to the certificates. But the result is apparently not good. Many people don’t make progress they expected and the terrible conditions remains. They are confused and complained what the reason is and who is wrong at first.Professor LiXiaohong gave her views about this issue:
