Lucy was a typical British middle-class lady. She has her own thoughts but was afraid to express herself. At that time the British society is a patriarchal society. She was born in a traditional British rich family. She was taught the rule of “fair lady” since a child. The ideal “female” should be waiting for the knights’ "protection" and accept their “honor” to be medieval lady. She was told that “women’s mission is to encourage others to achieve something, rather than to achieve by themselves”(43).
According to the title of this novel, there is a room with a view. However, Lucy didn’t have a room she had wanted before at the beginning of this story, and then, in Italy, Lucy opened a “room” in her heart. And through this “room”, she faced nature and saw her true heart. She began to know true heart and equal love are the “view” of her life. At last, she chose to be an indepentent women instead of a “view” of man’s eyes. In the same time, her female conscience awaked.
