Abstract Little Women is one of the classic works of American author Louisa May Alcott. It is a family ethical novel which is set in the American Civil War and based on the four sisters’ daily lives in an ordinary family.
Mrs. March’s family education is researched in this thesis, and this article is written from three aspects to analyze how Mrs. March’s way of education influences the four sisters gradually. The first aspect is about the family environment. A free family environment is beneficial to children’s healthy growth. Mrs. March always sets a good example to teach the four sisters what to do and how to do it by means of her practical actions. She is always willing to integrate in the four sisters’ amateur life and interacts with them as they grow up. The second aspect is about the positive outlook on life. Mrs. March tells her daughters through daily life that though they will have setbacks in the process of growth, as long as they use positive and optimistic attitude to face life, nothing can stop their pace of progress. The third aspect is about loyalty to marriage. Mrs. March educates her daughters that marriage is not based on money but love. Loyalty and gender equality in marriage are very important. Analyzing these three aspects aims at a thorough understanding of the importance of family education, and attempts to provide lessons for Chinese family education.52860

Mrs. March’s Family Education in Little Women
Introduction
Louisa May Alcott, an American woman writer, was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania on November 29, 1832. Her father was indulged in pursuing dreams and couldn’t support family, so the burden of supporting family bore down on her mother. In the early years, Alcott worked as a servant to support family and lived with other three sisters in a poor life. She was interested in writing when she was little. Alcott was interested in theatrics at 10, and she wrote the first melodrama at 15. At the age of 16, she wrote Flower Fables and published six years later. After that, she wrote many dramas, novels and poems. In 1868, a publisher advised her to write “girl’s book” and she wrote Little Women based on the life of her childhood. Jo is herself, Amy, Beth and Meg are her three sisters. Many of the stories in the book are based on her real life, but in real life their economic situation was worse. This book was published and had a big success, touching countless American readers, especially female readers’ heartstrings. Little Women has been recognized as American classic, and has been warmly welcomed over 100 years. The work has dozens of versions in different languages all over the world. The book was also popular in the 1930s in China.
