Thomas Hardy’s primary novels are Wessex novels. He classified these novels himself into three groups. The first group is novels of character and environment, which are also called Wessex novels. These novels take the southwest country of England as the setting of the stories. They include Far From the Madding Crowd, The Return of the Native,The Mayor of Casterbridge, Tess of the d’Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure. The second group is romances and fantasies, mainly talking about love stories, such as A Pair of Blue Eyes, Two on a Tower and so on. The third group is novels of ingenuity, such as Desperate Remedies, The Hand of Ethelbertaand A Laodicean. Among his famous novels the best known are Tess of the d’Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure. When he was 60 years old, he gave up novel writing and turned to poetry. He published 8 volumes of poems, altogether 918. He achieved great mastership in the field of philosophical lyrics. Most of his works reflected his social pessimism and sense of tragedy in human life.In view of his contribution to the literature, he is a deserved literary giant in literary history at the turn of the 19th century.
