When The Good Earth, the second novel of Pearl S Buck, was published in 1931, Pearl S Buck (1892-1993) quickly gained a reputation throughout the world for her moving story of the joys and tragedies of the Chinese peasant Wang Lung and his family. The Good Earth was a best seller in the United States, which is her most famous work, after being published, it was soon translated into more than thirty foreign languages, it has appeared in Chinese alone in at least seven different translations. The Good Earth was made into a Broadway play and a motion picture. For this book, Pearl S Buck received the Pulitzer Prize in 1932 and the William Dean Howells Medal for Distinguished Fiction in 1935. Her international reputation was established when she was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1938, primarily in recognition of her masterpiece novel. The Good Earth gives an accurate and well-informed depiction of traditional Chinese culture in the early 20th century. It is closely related to China's political fate, presenting the details of Chinese people’s real life, customs and attitudes in a simple and easy way. Although numerous of researches has been done on The Good Earth, some on the feminism, some about intercultural communication or humanity, the research of the language style is seldom been found. Consequently, this paper is to analyze the language style in The Good Earth through three aspects. After the brief introduction about Pearl and The Good Earth, then the previous studies on The Good Earth in Literature Review, there comes the body of this thesis. The third part, the analysis of language style is made up of the feature of popular and easy words, the feature of using short sentences, as well as the feature of expressions in Chinese-language style. Her works have been translated into more languages than any American writers’ books, being popular among all the readers throughout the world until her death. Her works mainly wrote about Asia especially China—her second Homeland. Concerning her Chinese novel series The Good Earth , lots of researches has been done on it and also many articles and books have been produced.
