Abstract With the development of the economic globalization, cross-cultural communication between China and America is becoming more and more frequent and important. The research of family values of America and China can help Chinese and Americans to further understand each other; it can also help to avoid the unnecessary conflict caused by the mistakes in cross-cultural communication. This paper tries to make a comparison of different family values in Chinese TV drama Naked Wedding and American TV drama Desperate Housewives. The differences appear in many aspects. First, their life styles are varied. Second, Americans prefer inpidualism while Chinese focus on collectivism. Third, the relationship between family members, like husband and wife, parents and kids, and between relatives, is quite different, and their attitudes to each other are quite different too. The reasons for these differences are complex, including different history background, culture value, employment situation and social security system and so on. 62538

Key words: Naked Wedding; Desperate Housewives; China and America family values; differences; reasons 摘要 随着全球经济一体化的加快，中美之间的交流变得越来越频繁且重要。对于中美家庭观进行研究有利于两国人民之间的互相理解，也有利于避免因跨文化交流的误解而产生的不必要冲突。本论文以电视剧《裸婚时代》和《绝望的主妇》为媒介，比较中美家庭价值观在多方面的差异：生活方式的不同，美国人强调个人主义而中国人注重集体主义，夫妻之间、亲子之间以及亲戚之间等关系的差异。中美家庭价值观产生差异的原因各不相同，主要包括不同历史背景、文化观念、就业状况、以及社保制度等。

1. Introduction Family is the basic unit of all human society. It reflects the ethical value of a society’s cultural characteristics and the unique features of a nation. People begin to learn about the world and their culture through the family they are brought in. What one thinks, how one acts, and even one’s language are all transmitted through the family. Family values are the core in the research of cultural values, and have a huge influence on people’s thoughts and behaviors. So if we want to know about the cultures of two different countries, it is necessary to know their family values. With the development of the science and technology, watching TV is more and more popular during our daily life. TV drama reflects a certain period of social phenomenon, or people’s psychological needs and values of a certain period. From TV drama, we can know about the culture and values of our country and other countries. So TV drama is a medium for us to study the family values. With the development of the global economy, cross-cultural communication between China and America are becoming more and more frequent and important. The research of different family values can help Chinese and Americans further understand each other; it can also help to avoid the unnecessary conflict caused by the mistakes in cross-cultural communication.
