Abstract Steinbeck’s masterpiece the Grapes of Wrath is a historical picture that authentically records the American landless peasants’ situations in the Great Depression, as well as a hymn of the spirit that people persevere in dignity even when they were facing adversity, and of the human nature which people love and help each other. This thesis aims to discuss the landless peasants’ wrath against those injustices, and the relation between the increasing wrath and their dignity. During the Great Depression, due to the natural and economical difficulties, the American landless peasants lost their home and land, and were forced to leave their hometown and started a journey to the west-California, which they hoped to make a living but, out of their expectation, with difficulties and adversities. Also, through collecting and analyzing the many misfortunes and injustices which the landless peasants encountered in the journey, and their increasing wrath, together with the praise of their love and help to each other to resist adversities when they were in dire strait, this thesis reveals that the landless peasants’ wrath, encouraged by their family and friends, could act as the motivation to defend their dignity with braveness.
Key Words: American landless peasants, the Great Depression, dignity, wrath, injustices
