摘要本文依据国内外学者在文化背景知识对阅读理解的影响方面所做的研究,从文化和语言的关系的角度出发,分别从词汇、片语、句子、语篇等语言系统的不同层面,逐层论述了文化差异对外语阅读理解的影响,说明文化差异可以影响阅读理解的每一个环节。同时也提出了帮助我们克服阅读中所遇到的文化障碍的途径和方法,最后得出结论认为文化差异对于阅读理解的障碍存在于语言学习的各个阶段,并进一步强调了文化背景知识在外语阅读理解中的重要性。23790

On the basis of researches done by scholars home and abroad and from the perspective of the relationship between language and culture, This thesis analyzes the effects of cultural differences on EFL reading comprehension in terms of vocabulary, sentences and texts, and it points out that cultural differences can affect every aspect of comprehension. This paper finally explores some methods to helping us overcome cultural barriers and concludes that the effects of cultural differences on comprehension exist at every steps of language learning and further stresses the important role of cultural background knowledge on EFL reading comprehension.

I. Introduction
With China’s great development in economy and the increase of cross-cultural communication, reform in English teaching in China is thought to be more urgent.
In traditional EFL class, English teachers present the main grammatical structures and language points of the texts through the process of paraphrasing sentences one by one, which results in students’ understanding of the sole superficial meaning of the reading material, but in many cases without a thorough comprehension of its deep implied meaning. As a consequence, students’ ability to read and fully comprehend a text cannot be improved. Actually, EFL reading comprehension is a kind of cross-cultural communication event. Therefore teaching culture in reading class may help students to improve their understanding of the texts as well as their cultural awareness.
This may be attributed to a number of factors. First, the power and scope of this effect has probably been underestimated. Secondly, emphasis has been put on oral and listening skills. Third, it is easier to identify and teach specific features of the phonological and grammatical systems of language in a methodical and concise way than to teach features of culture.
