2.2 Analysis of The French Lieutenant’s Woman From Ecological Perspective
Some other literary critics made an analysis of this novel from the view of ecology, so this section makes a comprehensive explanation on those critics’s analysis. The relation between human and nature is a rather important dimension reflected in the characters created by John Fowles who always portray the character’s personality and thoughts through their feeling to nature. In this novel, the kind and beautiful characters like Sarah and Mary ( a servant to the hero’ fiancée ), are always keeping a spiritual communication with nature. However, the vicious characters like Mrs Cotton the host in a preachers’ association) and Mrs Poulteney ( a wealthy widow who used to be Sarah’s employer ) cannot adapt to nature.“Some of them are hostile to the wild nature and regard it as a place while some of them deny human’s basic instinct and deem it as an origin of shamelessness( Bomarito Jessicia 76) 〞. According to the popular morality in the society, Mrs Cotton and Mrs Poulteney are the philanthropists known far and near. However, in terms of destroying human’s rights, they are evil criminals. It is obvious that John Fowles judges them from the latter aspect. Besides, the relation between nature and morality is also an essential question that the author considered. The affection to nature often includes the affirmation of human nature. Thereby, “nature” is used to criticize the function of morality. In The French Lieutenant’s woman, John Fowles criticizes that the Victorian society oppresses people’s right and free determination, and extols Sarah’s spirit of obtaining freedom and dignity, showing a new morality of liberating humanity rather than oppressing it by Charles’s American experience.
