    摘要本论文主要从翻译学的角度研究译者汉语水平与其英译汉(英语翻译)能力的相关性,旨在揭示母语在二语习得中可以发挥的积极作用。为了实现该目的,笔者选取南京理工大学外国语学院大四年级的20位英语专业学生作为调查对象,搜集并记录其专业四级成绩、高考语文成绩和英语翻译课程成绩以供研究。通过数据分析,笔者发现译者汉语水平与其英语翻译能力呈正相关,而这一结论在Schaffner和Adab的《翻译能力培养》、Nida的“功能对等”、Newmark的“母语原则”等论述中均可得到证实。但需要说明的是,这一结论不是绝对的,即只有满足一定条件(译者具备较平衡的双语能力且其他影响翻译能力和结果的因素小到可以忽略不计),该命题才为真。最后,笔者建议外语学习者们在汲取外语知识的同时应当不断增强母语知识和母语文化储备,而外语教学者们在教学实践中也要引导学生不断提高母语素养。32969

    Title       On the Correlation between Chinese Proficiency and E-C Translation Competence               
    Abstract
    The paper mainly discusses the correlation between Chinese proficiency and E-C translation competence from the perspective of translatology, aiming to reveal the positive role that our mother-tongue (Chinese) might play in second language acquisition (SLA). To achieve the goal, twenty English majors from Nanjing University of Science and Technology (NJUST) are chosen to fill in the author’s questionnaire and through the analysis of the data collected from them, it is clear that there is a positive correlation between Chinese proficiency and E-C translation competence, which can also be confirmed in some scholars’ findings, such as Schaffner and Adab’s Developing Translation Competence, Newmark’s “the mother-tongue principle” and Nida’s “functional equivalence”. However, the correlation is not absolute but conditional, which means the proposition will not be true unless the mother-tongue’s adverse effects are confined in scope by the translator and other factors in translating are negligible. And at last, the author suggests that foreign language learners should not only improve their foreign language proficiency but also increase that of their mother-tongues; and foreign language teachers are also needed to emphasize the positive role of the mother-tongue in SLA.

    1  Introduction
    The thesis mainly refers to three academic fields--translatology, culturology and SLA.
    It is told by David L. Shaul and Furbee (1997) that to learn and use mother-tongues is one of the most fundamental methods for people’s knowing the world. But the fixed rules of both grammar and thought endowed by the first language are sometimes considered the poison that will kill learners’ capabilities of learning foreign languages (Shaul & Furbee, 1997; Li, 2008). And according to Shaul and Furbee (1997), more differences between languages would lead to stronger poisoning. The author thinks that the law can also apply to cultures because a language and its culture are homogeneous (Kramsch, 1998), which means that if culture X is more different from culture Y, language X will kill people’s capability of learning language Y much more.
