2.1 Differences in Symbolic Meanings
Both Chinese and English languages are rich of various color words. For instance, we not only use “red flowers”, “green trees”, “blue sky” and “white clouds” to express these specific things, but also use “pink memories” and “black humor” to represent these abstract things. So a color term is a recognized symbol describing each color in the world (Berlin and Kay 59). However, due to different cultures and customs, many color words have different symbolic meanings between Chinese and English cultures. The following will be analysis of their different symbolic meanings in two different cultures.
