The paper will be pided into five parts. At the beginning of the paper, the author will describe development of computer and computer English. The next part will give a brief introduction to the lexical features of computer English. The third part will elaborate the principles of computer English translation. The fourth part will analyze translation methods of computer English. In this section, the author will choose some examples to elaborate the application of literal and free translation. Finally, the author will make a conclusion about this paper.
II. Word Formation of Computer English
In order to learn computer English, only to master the basic English grammar and word formation is not enough. Computer English has its own characteristics. Through carefully reading these words, we can find many simple but useful vocabulary and grammatical features of translation.
In the Computer English vocabulary, some are technical terms, such as professional, router, hub, host; some of them are borrowed from other disciplines vocabulary, such as input, circuit board and so on. Some are common English words that turned into professional vocabulary, for example, memory, mouse, monitor and so on. Finally, with the continuous developing of the times, new words are constantly emerging (Xu 4). But with the developing of computer science, a lot of new words of computer have formed a variety of fresh names to meet people’s growing material and cultural needs by synthesis, transformation, derived from others, abbreviation and so on. For example: object- oriented, point-to-point and so on.
In fact, the grammatical features of the computer English is relatively simple, which can be roughly pided into three points. First, the passive voice is more being used. There are two reasons: one is because the computer is an object that always used by people in the event. So the computer in English is passive voice more. The other is because the computer English is objective. For the sake of objective, passive voice and the simple present tense is more used. Second, extensive use of non-finite verbs, including the infinitive, gerund, participle and the past participle is common. Third, there are more complex sentences. Computer English often use noun clauses, attributive clauses, and adverbial clauses. The term in computer English is more often defined by researcher, and thus the term will be followed by explanations and the noun clause is the best choice. Thus, we can see a lot of literature in computer which have a lot of complex sentences, most of which are used to explain. Therefore, it often occurs that the main sentence is short while clauses are much longer.
