Abstract Eileen Chang is one of the few authoresses in modern Chinese literature who are good at both Chinese and English. The Golden Cangue, one of Chang’s representative works, has won her great fame in China, but its English version has failed her expectation to get into the American market. This thesis analyzes Chang’s last version of The Golden Cangue from the perspective of polysystem theory proposed by Even-Zohar, so as to find out the reasons for its failure to draw attention from the target language readers and to explore further the conditions for successful application of foreignization strategy. There are altogether three chapters in this thesis. Chapter one analyzes the foreignization strategy adopted in The Golden Cangue. Chapter two expounds on the causes of failure of the foreignization strategy on the basis of polysystem theory. Chapter three explains the conditions for successful application of foreignization strategy in the hope that we can better promote our Chinese culture to the whole world. 42980

Foreignization, introduced by Venuti on the basis of deconstructionism, is a far cry from the tradition of fluency and faithfulness, adding to the resistance of cultural hegemony. As one of the most popular works of Eileen Chang, The Golden Cangue has been the flavor of the month in China for generations, but it's English version, translated by Eileen Chang herself, failed her expectation to seek access to the American market. In the English version of The Golden Cangue, foreignization is the main translation strategy used to retain faithfulness to the original book.
