When it comes to modern China, in order to make a communication as well as an improvement of relationship with the western countries, and learn some advanced science and technology from the developed countries, China’s central government admitted English as one of the three major courses with Chinese and Mathematic after the Reform and Opening-up Policy was carried out in China in 1979, then learning English becomes more and more popular among those young people who are ambitious in China.
After China’s entry of World Trade Organization and the success of getting the entitlement to host the Olympic Game in Beijing in 2008 and the World Expo in Shanghai in 2010, Chinese people are more eager to learn English. From baby boys and girls in two or three years old who are sent to English early education center to learn English by their parents, to senior people who pick up English test books again to learn English with the faith that it is never too old to learn, and from taxi drivers to the sanitation workers, who spend lots of time learning English when they get off work, they are proud of being able to use English in their daily lives, especially, in Beijing and Shanghai these two cities. Therefore, the English training centers and institutions spring up like mushrooms all over the country. According to the statistics showed in The Report on the Development of National Education in China made by China’s Ministry of Education in 2013 which was about the current situation and the trend of the English training centers and institution market, there are more than 50,000 English training institutions in all in China and the English training market value is over 30 billion. As a result, the English training industry has become a leader of in the training industry. In addition, there are about 300 million Chinese people are learning English, which is approximately equal with the total number of American population, and that means one in every four people learns English in China.
The China Youth Daily showed that the China's Foreign Language Education Research Center had made a study among more than 4,000 non-English major students about the time they spend in learning English in 2004. This research showed that 19 percent of them spend almost of all their spare time in learning English and 56 percent of them spend most of their spare time in learning English.
From those statistics, we can see the popularity of learning English in our society cannot be denied and people’s enthusiasm to learn English is higher than that to learn their mother language, Chinese.
