Chapter One Introduction
The Joy Luck Club (1989) is Amy Tan’s masterpiece. It focuses on four Chinese American immigrant families in San Francisco and California. They start a club named ”the Joy Luck Club” to play the Chinese game of mahjong for money while feasting on food. These four mothers all come from China with different experience, life orientation and identity. Mothers try to let their daughters inherit Chinese culture. However, the daughters being born in the United State cannot understand their mothers. And, they do not want to inherit the culture that they do not know. However, daughters get lost in the white society. Then they get a kind of epiphany from their mothers’ love and culture. Finally they reconcile with their mothers.
