2. Literature Review
A person is born into a family, matures in a family, establishes new families and leaves them at his death. Family life is a universal human experience. “A family derives from private ownership and is an inevitable product in the development of social productive forces (Xie Yongxin, 1995:70).” Having a huge influence on people’s thoughts and behaviors, a family is a mirror of culture values. With the reform and opening up, Chinese family values underwent great changes in the twentieth century. Meanwhile, because of information revolution and the trend of global economic integration, cross-cultural communication becomes universal, vital and significant. Many scholars thus devote themselves to the study of cross-cultural communication. Various theories and practices concerning family values spring up in China, such as communication between cultures and comparative study between Chinese and American cultures. But most domestic studies overemphasize negative aspects in family values which have been changing. In the research of American family values, Wang Cheng summarizes it as independence, inpidual rights, freedom and equality (Wang Cheng, 2005:7). Nevertheless, some researchers contend that the core American family values have changed from respect to equality in the contemporary world and filial piety is still the main values in China. Also, some researchers have done a comprehensive analysis of family education in these two countries. Based on these, the thesis partially compares relationships between parents and children in China and America and partly focuses on traditional and modern conjugal relationships. The research is expected to make a further study between the two types of family values.
