Abstract The Catcher in the Rye has been a very popular book both among teenagers and adults since it was published. Holden as the leading role of the book raises many people’s interest and many literature have been done on analyzing Holden. This paper focuses on a new topic on discussing whether Holden has feminine tendency in his mentality. Through discussing the background culture of Holden’s time, Holden’s body image, the environment Holden in and Holden’s understanding of sex, this paper proves the possibility of Holden’s feminine tendency in his mentality. Then, this paper analyzes Holden’s character and mentality and compares the analysis results with traits that traditionally cited as feminine in order to tell whether Holden has feminine tendency in his mentality or not. Besides, this paper analyzes some plots in The Catcher in the Rye and gets some evidence on Holden’s feminine tendency in his mentality.60836

论霍尔顿是否有女性倾向心理
《麦田里的守望者》自出版起便深受青少年和成人的追捧。而霍尔顿作为书中的主角自然引起了很多学者的研究兴趣， 到如今关于分析霍尔顿这一人物的文献已数不胜数。本文从一个新的角度专注分析霍尔顿的女性倾向心理。首先，本文通过分析霍尔顿所处时代的背景文化，霍尔顿的外貌特征， 霍尔顿的成长环境以及霍尔顿对性的认识这四方面论证了霍尔顿拥有具有女性倾向心理的可能性。 然后，本文又分析了霍尔顿的性格和心理，并将分析结果与传统意义上所认为的女性化特征做了对比，以此来判断霍尔顿是否具有女性倾向心理。此外， 本文还分析了《麦田里的守望者》一书中的几个情节。 通过情节分析为霍尔顿具有女性倾向心理这一论点提供了论据。

The Catcher in the Rye has been a bestseller since it was published and becomes especially popular among the teenagers. Holden, being the leading role of the book raises a lot of people’s interest. Many researches have been done and many literature have been written on analyzing Holden, including his character, mentality, body image and so on.
For the character, Han Yang(2014) pointed out that Holden is always telling lies. His lies are usually used to deceive himself because he refused to admit his weaknesses. And this behavior proves his recurrence. Huang Yingqiu(2007) found that when old Maurice blackmailed him or Stradlater beat him, he tried to fight back but ended in getting injured. In this regard, Holden’s recurrence lies in his physical weakness. However, Huang Yingqiu(2007) also found that Holden wanted to call Jane several times but actually he dared not call even for once. He imagined being shoot for many times which implies that he wanted to escape from the world by death, but he didn’t have enough courage to die. These prove his recurrence is in his nature. Besides, Huang Yingqiu(2007) found Holden is pure, upright, kindhearted and longing for good spiritual life. Han Yang(2014) also said Holden is lonely and always escaping from the problems.
