Abstract In the 19th century, with the development of the industrial revolution and capitalist expansion, the British economic and political situation, which used to be monopolized by the noble, had undergone great changes: bourgeoisie and proletariat were growing quickly. Meanwhile, the British feminism consciousness was awakening. Before the Victorian era, the pursuit for most women was to marry a noble family, but Jane Eyre broke the shackles of the image of women. Jane Eyre has successfully created a brave, rebellious, self-esteemed woman image with the pursuit of equality and independence. Furthermore, her relentless pursuit of true love also exerted influences on other women at that time. Although Jane is plain, she leaves readers a very deep impression because of her unique personality. She awakens more women to stand up for the equal rights as men. Despite her low status, Jane does not give up pursuing of love and happiness. No matter how chaotic environment is, Jane never loses hope and faith. This thesis analyzes Jane’s distinctive characteristics and tries to explore the reasons mainly from the perspective of the 19th century social backgrounds and Jane’s personal experience in order to enhance better comprehension of Jane Eyre in literary work.61266

Charlotte Bronte was born on April 21, 1816, in Yorkshire, England. She lived a very miserable childhood life. At the age of five, her mother died of cancer and all the family members were very sad and lived a hard life. Fortunately, her father was knowledgeable and he often taught children to study, and guided them to read magazines or told them stories. This is the only fun after the death of their mother, which also made Charlotte develop an interest in literature at an early age. In 1824, Charlotte and her three sisters, Maria, Elizabeth and Emily, were sent to Cohen Bridge, the school of the priest’s daughter. Unfortunately, Maria and Elizabeth contracted tuberculosis and were sent home. After a few days, they died painfully. The father then immediately took Charlotte home. At home, Charlotte and her other sisters began to learn music, play the piano, sing, and paint, but what they are most interested in was writing. At the age of 15, Charlotte entered the school set up by Miss Wooler. In 1835, in order to earn money for her brothers and sisters to go to school, she became a teacher in a school. At the same time, she also worked as a private tutor for wealthy families. Although the tutor work was despised by others, Charlotte recruited her sisters to join to build a school.
