1. Introduction
English is becoming more and more important in the new century, especially with the unavoidable trend of globalization, internationalization of language. In China, the importance of vocabulary in second language acquisition has been greatly recognized. For many students, they believe that learning a word means knowing its pronunciation, spelling and meaning, which can be memorized absolutely by themselves. However, students cannot achieve a high level after several years’ learning, and vocabulary is becoming the most challenge for them.
According to the New English Curriculum Standard, about 1500 English words should be learned at the end of English learning after junior school education. But the question is that how many words students actually should master and whether they have achieved the requirement of the curriculum by the time of their education.
