Abstract In Amy Tan’s book The Joy Luck Club, the four daughters who grow up in America have many contradictions and conflicts with their respective Chinese mothers as there are many differences between Chinese culture and American culture. But the four daughters finally get a real growth by merging the two cultures together. 61788
The four mothers were influenced profoundly by their Chinese mothers and they accepted the traditional Chinese education at their early stage while their daughters all grew up in the American environment and accepted western education. The cultural interaction can lead to cultural collision and cultural fusion, so the relationship between the mothers and daughters were strained at first but smooth at last. Finally the four daughters find themselves under the influence of two different cultures.
The thesis is pided into six parts. The first part serves as an introduction. The second part aims at describing the relationships between the four daughters and their mothers in The Joy Luck Club. The third part explores the four daughters’ growth under the collisions between the Chinese and American cultures in The Joy Luck Club. The fourth part probes into the four daughters’ growth under the fusions between Chinese and American cultures in The Joy Luck Club. The fifth part functions as a conclusion. The last part is bibliography.

摘要在著名美籍华裔女作家谭恩美的小说《喜福会》中，由于中西文化的差异，四位在西方文化背景影响下长大的女儿与她们各自的中国母亲之间有不少的矛盾和冲突。但最终她们都得到了真正的成长。
在那个年代的中国，四位母亲受自己中国母亲的影响是很大的，并且在她们人生的前期，也深深受着中国传统文化的熏陶；然而她们的女儿，却是喝着可口可乐、受着西方教育而成长的。两种不同文化交织在一起必然会引起文化碰撞和文化融合。因为在四位女儿前期的成长中，因为文化的碰撞，和母亲的关系紧张；在后期则因为文化的融合，和母亲的关系得以缓和，并找到真我。
本篇论文共分为六部分。第一部分是介绍。第二部分旨在描述《喜福会》中四位女儿与她们母亲之间的关系。第三部分主要阐述了《喜福会》中四位女儿在中西文化碰撞下的成长。第四部分则是探索了《喜福会》中四位女儿在中西文化融合下的成长。第五部分是结尾。最后一部分则是参考文献。
