1 Introduction
Lessing's the Golden Notebook is one of the most important feminist works in the last century. In the same era, it is difficult to find another work that has described the situation of women in such a detailed and profound way. The most important significance of the novel is that it is an epic of educated women's experiences about self-liberation.
In the Golden Notebook, Lessing has a rational look at almost all aspects of Western free women and highlights various difficulties the intellectual women have encountered in the process of seeking self-liberation. This novel depicts the plight of free women far beyond the works of feminism in other times. Lessing tries to analyze all the survival crises of free women from a broader perspective, and more importantly, she provides a unique outlet for free women, which is the reason why the Golden Notebook is so profound.
1.1 The Literature Review of the Golden Notebook
The Golden Notebook, published in 1962, having won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2007, is a perfect combination of its content and form. In the earlier times, the experts have made comprehensive research on Lessing, discussing the concept of Lessing’s living philosophy and its relation to the novel as well as brilliant analysis of the flow of time and “Sufism” (Guo Zhiwen, 2011:139-141). After the 20th century, more researches analyze the novel from new perspectives respectively on the topics of narrative techniques and the relationship between men and women. For example, “some uses Brecht's dramatic theory to analyze the overall integration of the notes” (Guo Zhiwen, 2011:139-141). Overall, the researches about this novel are mainly focused on two aspects: one is the survival plight of women in that era which reveals Lessing’ thought about the living conditions of women. Such thought aims to study the human existence as a whole, and to some extent, it is beyond the traditional feminism that struggles for power through the opposition against men; another is Lessing’s feminine consciousness in the novel. “The analysis interprets how to use Anna's experiences to deconstruct male-centered cultural order and pays attention to women’s pursuit of self-independence and complete liberation” (Lu Jing, 2008:78).
