“without grammar, very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary, nothing can be conveyed.” (Wilkins, 1987) Vocabulary plays an important role when learning foreign language. Even more directly, McCarthy (1998) has pointed that no matter how well the student learns grammar, no matter how successfully he masters the sounds of a L2, communication in that language cannot happen without words. The importance of vocabulary teaching was not widely recognized until the middle 20th century when the grammar teaching stepped back.
